Building forward with confidence : Reflections on 2025 and the priorities shaping ARTes in 2026

Taking stock — even as the year moves on

We’re already well into 2026 and approaching the end of the first quarter. In a market that moves as quickly as ours, that can feel like a long time ago — but reflection still matters, particularly when the lessons from the previous year continue to shape decisions, priorities, and direction.

If I had to sum up 2025 in a single word, it would be resilience — not because the year was defined by difficulty, but because it reinforced the importance of preparation, discipline, and staying true to long-term thinking when conditions become less predictable.

Managing change without losing focus

Like many specialist businesses, Artes operated in a market that was changing around us. Capacity dynamics changed, competition increased, and the wider specialty insurance environment became noisier following several years of strong profitability at insurer level. None of that was unexpected, but it did require focus.

What matters in moments like that is not reacting impulsively but continuing to execute well — and that is exactly what the business did.

When foundations are tested, not built

One of the most reassuring aspects of the year was seeing how the foundations we’ve built as a business performed under pressure. Time spent on governance, structure, and process can sometimes feel removed from day-to-day underwriting, but in 2025 those disciplines proved their worth.

Having clear plans, well-understood contingencies, and a team aligned around how we operate allowed us to move decisively while maintaining service levels for brokers and policyholders.

Importantly, the business never stopped functioning as it should. Our relationships held firm, our partners stayed engaged, and our team continued to deliver. If anything, the experience sharpened how we operate and reinforced confidence — both internally and externally — in Artes’ ability to manage complexity.

Investing ahead of the curve

Looking back, one decision that will have a lasting impact was our continued investment in underwriting systems and data capability.

Specialist underwriting today requires more than experience and judgement alone; it requires tools that support intelligent, consistent decision-making. Advancing our platform allowed us to better ingest data, streamline documentation, and demonstrate tangible value to distribution partners. It’s an area where we deliberately invested ahead of the curve, and the benefits are now becoming clear.

Market cycles don’t change the fundamentals

From a market perspective, 2025 highlighted a familiar cycle. After record profitability at capacity level, competition inevitably increased and pricing pressure followed.

For Artes, that didn’t fundamentally change how we operate. We work in specialist, relationship-driven markets where underwriting discipline, claims performance, and long-term consistency still matter more than chasing short-term volume. Experience, track record, and clarity of approach continue to count — particularly when policyholders are making decisions about who they want beside them when losses occur.

Choosing patience over pace

The year also reinforced the tension between short-term pressure and long-term thinking, particularly around recruitment.

We have always believed that growth only works when the right people are in place, and finding those people takes time. There were opportunities to move faster, but we chose patience over speed. That discipline has paid off, and it will continue to shape how we grow the business.

Planning for uncertainty, communicating with confidence

Perhaps the most important lesson from 2025 was a simple one: always have a plan B — and make sure it’s understood, tested, and trusted.

Calm communication, both internally and externally, is not a soft skill in moments like that; it’s a strategic necessity. Clear, timely communication builds confidence, and confidence allows everyone to focus on execution rather than distraction.

What “good growth” looks like in 2026

As we look ahead to 2026, the focus is clear. We’re rebuilding and expanding our core book, launching new products in markets where our specialist knowledge genuinely adds value, and continuing to collaborate closely with brokers and capacity partners.

“Good growth” for Artes doesn’t mean growth at any cost. It means sticking to our underwriting philosophy, choosing opportunities carefully, and building portfolios designed to perform over time. It also means continuing to invest in people, systems, and partnerships that support sustainable progress.

Building forward with confidence

I’m confident heading into 2026 — not because the market is easy, but because Artes is stronger, more focused, and better positioned than it was a year ago.

The business is in a great place to continue leading in the specialist areas we know best and to grow in a way that is deliberate, disciplined, and built for the long term.
